In this novel, Vincent is the hidden, unacknowledged monster brother of Lord Alastair, Master of Raven's Rock in Scotland during the era of Viking invasions (1098). An appeal is sent to Raven's Rock by Norman Lady Catherine who is orphaned and about to be wed against her will for her property. In childhood, Lady Catherine had been betrothed to the Lord of Raven's Rock and therefore appeals to him to rescue her.
